This project began with a simple but important question from the homeowner: “Is it possible to move my kitchen from the middle of my house to a bedroom?” Her main concern was that the existing kitchen lacked windows and natural light, leaving the heart of her home feeling dark and closed in.
While relocating the kitchen was an option, we developed a more creative solution that achieved her goal without sacrificing layout efficiency. The family room shared an exterior wall with the kitchen, but that wall was dominated by a large fireplace. We redesigned the space by relocating the fireplace to an interior wall and installing a four-panel bi-parting sliding glass door along the exterior wall. This dramatically increased natural light to both the family room and kitchen, completely transforming the feel of the space.
Inside the kitchen, we eliminated an oversized, awkward pantry closet that consumed valuable square footage. In its place, we designed double pantry cabinetry with roll-out shelving, creating better organization, improved accessibility, and a more efficient footprint.
The homeowner desired a plaster hood and matching fireplace surround, but solid plaster construction can be costly. To achieve the look in a more cost-effective way, we built custom wood framing for both features and applied plaster finishes, creating a seamless, high-end aesthetic while significantly reducing material costs. Through multiple design sketches and on-site modifications, we refined the details to deliver a truly one-of-a-kind result.
The finished space features a large marble island with generous seating, full-height marble backsplash, two-tone cabinetry with painted perimeter cabinets, and a stained wood island — blending warmth, elegance, and functionality. The result is a bright, open kitchen and living space that feels completely reimagined while staying true to the homeowner’s original vision of bringing natural light into the heart of her home.
